Job Title: DME/Medicare Specialist

Summary: Assists community and long-term care pharmacies and the nurse with DME billing, fittings, and patient education related to the processing and use of DME equipment by performing the following duties.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Processes claims for insurance, MA, and Medicare for all DME items including general supports and braces, urologicals, diabetic supplies, gloves, ostomy supplies, diabetic shoes, compression stockings, crutches, bathroom aids, inhalation solution, walkers, canes, wound care, and others.
  2. Responsible for prior authorizations for all DME and audits.
  3. Assists patients in their selection of DME products in the retail store.
  4. Assists nursing staff in patient education related to the use of DME equipment including compression stocking application and use of diabetic equipment.
  5. Works closely with all department staff members in the maintenance and ordering of DME products.
  6. Responsible for training employees on Medicare and insurance billing processes for DME.
  7. Assists in the research of new product selections.
  8. Performs job duties as a Pharmacy Technician III.      
  9. Performs other miscellaneous activities as requested.
  10. Required to attend and complete any mandatory training and events.

Language Ability: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software, spreadsheet software, and database software.

Emotional Intelligence: Ability to be aware of self and surroundings, capable of initiating action and becoming self-motivated, attentiveness to needs of patients and colleagues.

Education/Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
